Semana Santa: A Deeply Rooted Tradition
Easter isn’t just about chocolates and the Easter bunny – it’s deeply rooted in Semana Santa traditions. Holy Week in Marbella and Málaga runs from Palm Sunday 13 April to Easter Sunday 20 April 2025, bringing daily religious processions to the streets. In Marbella’s Old Town, you can watch local “cofradías” (brotherhoods) carry ornate floats through flower-lined medieval lanes each evening.
In Málaga, the processions are on a grander scale: they start on Palm Sunday and continue until Easter Sunday, with the most dramatic and solemn events on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday. One famous highlight in Málaga is the Maundy Thursday (17 April) procession of the Cristo de la Buena Muerte – the Spanish Legion marches with the Christ of the Good Death, a stirring spectacle that draws thousands of onlookers. These processions are free to attend and offer an unforgettable cultural experience, at 18:55h in Parroquia de Santo Domingo (Barrio del Perchel).
